![]() With AIDS, the coke/crack epidemic, rising class gaps, I think it was two empathetic men hoping friends they were losing to this world were being greeted with a little kindness and caring they weren't receiving on the mortal plane. The real world was being seen through the lens of a cold, uncaring place, with no (or severely waning) empathy for one's fellow human. I think the idea of an empathetic Death was more of a sign of the times than anything else. Pratchett's Death never really resented the job, it was just his duty and he is a professional. She resented the job at one point, but came to respect her position and how she did it by empathizing with life. ![]() Gaiman's Death seemed to have come to her ideas about her station in a more indirect path. It can't be refuted there were most likely some influence between the two, but I think Gaiman was a smart enough person in his own right that he came up with his version of Death without too much of Pratchett's idea. ![]()
